What would the use be for this type of twist lock recept? It's a non-NEMA style 50A/208V/3P/4W+G. It's in an outdoor park area at a city hall building.
Is it for shore power? But what entity would have the corresponding plug standard that they could use the non-NEMA receptacle?

Pretty sure our spider box at the college plugs into a recept like that. I'll check tomorrow, its too close to quitting time to walk out there lol.

There is no requirement to use NEMA receptacle configurations. They are simply very common.

There isn't even a requirement to use the NEMA receptacles in ways that match the voltage associated with a given configuration. (Though it would IMHO have to be a strange situation to justify not following the configuration. )

The 'California Style' connectors happen to be very common for 50A circuits.

Maybe they just chose something unusual to prevent someone from plugging in something unauthorized.

I've put twist locks on welders that have a 120v DC receptacle on them. Stops kids from plugging their electronics into them and letting the magic smoke out

As noted, the pin is known as CS or California style. Very popular in the temporary power industry, particularly entertainment.
