what type of wiring method is needed for the equipment branch wiring in a category 2 nursing home.Does it have to be mechanically protected in non-flexible metal raceways as the critical branch and life safety branch are or is there relief.

The equipment branch is not subject to 517.30(C)(3) in any type of facility. That being said, I don't believe there is a requirement to mechanically protect Life Safety or Critical branch circuits in a nursing home at all.

Also, informational note: In nursing homes under the NEC, you are only required to have a LS and Critical branch. Equipment is not required.

In NFPA 99 they are referred to as LS and Equipment, no critical.

Good Catch. I would say that is the exception versus the norm.
I don't see the exception,
For me, it's quite clear where only the type 1 either category 1 or 2 shall require mechanical protection for wiring installation,
Correct me if i am wrong.
