A farm I'm involved with has an existing underground 3 wire feed to the dairy barn, an existing overhead triplex to the house and existing 3 wire underground to a machine shed. This week a new meter was installed on a pole and below that a Ronk isolating/transfer switch was also installed. There is no overcurrent protection. All loads can be disconnected with the Ronk disconnect. It is my understanding according to 547.9 (D) that the existing underground wiring now needs to have overcurrent protection at the source. This article says, " WHERE the service disconnecting means and overcurrent protection for EACH set of feeders is located at the distribution point".....
To me this language seems to say I can put the overcurrent protection at the distribution point OR at the ag building. I had thought that for underground feeds we are now required to put in overcurrent protection with disconnecting means at the distribution point. Hopefully someone can understand what I'm rambling on about. Our state complies with the 2008 NEC. Thanks!!
