We are building a gas plant and as of right now the shop drawings for a 5kv Soft Start show top only entry(feeder and load however my prints and previous experience(whether its wrong or right) tell me the equipment should have a window for bottom exit. Are there any requirements that state i can not put 5kv in a fully seperate cable tray?

It is common to install medium voltage cables and conductors in tray. Warning signs are required along the tray if the voltage exceeds 600.

There is the basic rule (not necessarily Code) that is used for MV equipment construction. All cables in the same space must have the same insulation rating. So for instance an unshielded 5 kV cable should not be in the same space with a 600 V insulated cable. Control wiring for CTs, PTs, starter coils, etc., is secured and routed far from MV cables. Technically if you use NM for instance at 240/120 which only carries a 300 V rating it should be routed away from any 480 V (600 V class) circuits. But since NEC requires shielded cable where the outer surface is 0 V that rule doesn’t really apply and it’s more of a convention,

Similarly it’s convention to try to avoid mixing line and load cables in the same raceway.

It’s not always possible to follow these rules every time.
