5KV Shielded Cable, Motor Terminations

I don't think that there is any way to terminate 5kV shielded cable without the use of stress cones.

Don I understand in practice that when shielded cable is used then stress cone terminations are the answer but if you just cut back the shield, taped it off say with 15KV tape how quickly would a blow out occur or maybe I should say cable failure,,,,,,,,,,,,,if it were immediate with in days then yes use a cone in practice but the question was "Is it an NEC Recommended Practice" I sat in a meeting this morning and a statement was made to the effect that it was, however, I don't remember ever reading such.

When they took away our Code Books and said use the electronic copy then research becomes a time consuming case of boredom, so I turn to the experts.

I don't find a rule that requires the use of stress cones but there is one that requires that the shield be bonded to a fault clearing path.
310.6 Shielding
Solid dielectric insulated conductors operated above 2000 volts in permanent installations shall have ozone-resistant insulation and shall be shielded. All metallic insulation shields shall be grounded through an effective grounding path meeting the requirements of 250.4(A)(5) or 250.4(B)(4). Shielding shall be for the purpose of confining the voltage stresses to the insulation.

Thanks Don thats my stand as well,,,,,,,,,,,,,the use is certainly advantages and it would not be good practice to not use them ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

I don't know why I get involved in asking these type questions other than winning a bet at the local PUB.

300.40 Insulation Shielding
Metallic and semiconducting insulation shielding components of shielded cables shall be removed for a distance dependent on the circuit voltage and insulation. Stress reduction means shall be provided at all terminations of factory-applied shielding.
Metallic shielding components such as tapes, wires, or braids, or combinations thereof, and their associated conducting or semiconducting components shall be grounded.
