I installed a 6-2G NM feeder to a 4 circuit nema 3r subpanel for 2 a/c's on a residence last week. The AHJ said I needed a 6-3g for the feeder to the 4 cir panel supply only 240v loads. I Told the AHJ is was straightr 240v with no provision for any 110v loads. (only 2-2pole spaces). Is there a feeder requirement I have missed that requires me to carry a neutral for this application. Comments please.

Other than a requirement to bring a grounded conductor to a service panel, there is no reason or requirement to have a neutral with a panel feeder.

215.2(B) Minimum Rating and Size.
(1) Two or more 2-wire branch circuits supplied by a 2-wire feeder.

This would indicate to me that a two wire feeder is permitted under your circumstance.
