Standard procedure around here is to drive the first rod, then lay the second rod next to the first, Then drive second rod where its far end lies. I know its overkill but it avoids persnickety Inspectors who get out their tape measure & say You are only 5'11' apart or some such blather.

The most effective spacing is twice the length of the rod, but the code only requires 6'.
