Am I required to make lighting whips no longer than 6' even if I ran an equipment grounding conducter with circuit conducters.

If you install an EGC you can make them as long as you like but, you might need to use a different term than fixture "whip" for real long ones.

If you are using MC, you may need some support other than the connectors when longer than 6'.

2008 NEC 330.30(D)(2)

Same goes for "greeenfield" or flex

2008 NEC 348.30(A) Exception No. 3

Supporting them is the issue once you get past 6' it changes how many times it needs supporting. I would hope you put a grounding conductor in them even if less then 6' I've seen to many pulled apart at the fittings.

Typical 3/8" FMC whips are only permitted in lengths up to 6' regardless of whether or not they contain an EGC. Longer than 6' and you'll need to use 1/2" or larger FMC. Look at 348.20(A)(2).
