Good morning. I am just starting out in the commerical and residential sector. I have been a transportation conctractor for 20 years. Once in a while i will quote a commercial or residential job when work is slow but picking them up is another story. Can you guys give me a rough figure of what a project to install 6 high bay lights, 20 feet in air with $1300.00 in material would run? I am not aksing for your trade secrets but an estimate. It seems as people around here are doing jobs for cost and no profit or overhead.

6 multitap 400 Watt high bay fixtures
150' emt
2 circuits

Thanks for the help.

If that is the case, then you are wasting your time bidding in that atmosphere. I stopped bidding such projects long ago, and am waiting for the rest of the contractors who are working below margins to fall by the wayside.

We are somewhat luckey in my area, most of these down in the dirt guys, went away over the last 10 months, the only reminder that they were here, is their van's sitting at their shop lot, or driveway collecting rust, they priced so low, there was no way they could surive long term.

Thanks for the responses. I am exactly in the middle of the estimate Buck provided. I do get frustrated but refuse to work for free. GL, WC, trucks, SG&A and everything else dont pay for themselves. I dont know how some people make it!

Thanks guys.

That is easy, some of your low ballers take cash and dash, they try to avoid those pesty taxes, and never insure for anything or buy a a min policy to get their license issued, their office is a pre paid cell phone, and a piece of scrap paper, their tools are either road kill tools, or they will borrow what they need from other trades on the job, now this may all sound a bit far out. but in the real world, this is common.
