6" rework housings

Can anyone point me in the direction of a hole saw that will cut a 6 3/8" hole.

My problem is that it's a plaster ceiling. I have already ruined a new 4" hole saw putting in smoke detectors.

It's a type of plaster board where the first 1/8" or so is incredibly hard. After getting through the "skin" it cuts like drywall.

It chips very easily also.

30+ cans to install??

Look for "grit edge" holesaws. Lowes has a Kobalt (house brand) one for 6" cans that easily cuts through plaster for $18 and change. Otherwise you can find all the oddball sizes you need online.

I had trouble finding the 6 3-8 that I thought I needed for Lithonia wafers

Only to learn that 6" gives better fit

As to the plaster, will std hole saw go thru in reverse, than forward thru the soft part?

You need a carbide tipped hole saw, the bimetallic standard ones will get torn up by the skim coat of the plaster, which you have noticed is extremely hard
