#6 aluminum may be allowed on a 60 amp breaker in certain situation such as motors or such but in general it has never been good for 60 amps except for de-rating purposes.

I work for an HVAC company and I see a #6 feeder going out to a sub panel feeding two condensing units all the time. It's usually on older houses though.

But each condenser has it's own circuit from the panel, Correct? Nothing wrong with that

We changed both systems, ran new liquid tight and thwn from sub panel to each condensing unit, and the inspector failed it because of the 60 amp breaker on the #6 feeder to the sub panel. Says it can't be over 50 amps.

I get it-- You didn't say it was on a 60 but I should have inferred that.. Yeah, that's not compliant
