in a 600 volt 3 phase system, is it delta? and is 347/600 volt wye?

if you have a stepdown transformer from 600v to 277/480 is the primary delta?

i cant find any info on this type of system. its rare but some of the buildings i work in have 600volts in it and want to know about the system before i work on it.

too all the safety guys i know how to work on this stuff safetly (turn power off, rubber gloves, arc flash suits, insulated tools etc.) i just want to learn more about this kind of service

in USA. the building we work in has 600 volts ran open wiring on insulators up high. its a old industrial building. they used to burndy off of it to feed diffderent machines

so i take it that its ungrounded? maybe corner grounded delta if it was grounded?

It could be either, but I'd guess it's probably ungrounded if the building had manufacturing in it at one time.

I've worked in a few of these old mills where the 600 volt system was in place. There are transformers literally everywhere for all the places where they needed a lower utilization voltage

thanks peter :) i want to get more jobs working in those old mills. the ones in fall river that have the spaces to rent out are an electrical nightmare. i remember going there to a party the day i got my license and it was crazy the tenant space had a panel that didnt even have a cover. there was feed rail all over the place that i didnt even know was live or not. obviously it was a handymans wiring. that place should be condemed

The only difference between a 208V, 480V, or 600V three phase system is the voltage. If you plan to go from 600V to 277/480 the primary of the step down transformer would usually be connected delta just as if you were going from 480V to 208/120V.

Up here in western Canada most industrial and heavy commercial is 600V delta or 347/600V wye. We generally install all 3 phase voltages 600V and lower exactly the same, making sure that the equipment is rated for the voltages used of course.

Yeah, some of the mills that have been converted but not fully renovated are electrical nightmares beyond all belief.

As for wanting to get more work in old mills, ummm....no thanks. Way too many opportunities to get killed or burned in those.

Do you really think the people who own those mills and leave them in that condition are going to spend money to improve that stuff? ;)

maybe they will if theres a fire or the city condemns it. one of my friends had a band space in new bedford in one of the mills and he had 3 single phase transformers right in the room with him. it fed a bunch of FPE equipment

600V is recognized by ANSI C84.1-1989 as a standard, but not a prefered voltage. It does not show a secodnary voltage alogside, so it is recogniozed as a delta system. 575V is identified as the nominal utilization voltage.
