600V or less conductors: is there a limitation for maximum wire size to be spliced?
 
Each end of every piece has to terminate on something. A device specifically designed to join two conductors together is just one possible place for them to terminate. The device should be designed for the size and type of conductor involved. Specific types of devices could be difficult to find in certain sizes but there is no rule preventing conductors to be joined together at all.
