My state is still on the 2017 NEC
625.22 tells me I need GFCI protection on a Nema 14-50 R receptacle 125/250 volt within 12 iches of the attachment plug? Am I reading this correctly?
Does this 12 inches need to be in sight of attachment plug? Can GFCI be inside and attacment plug or receptacle outside?

That section is regarding the EVSE, not the outlet. If the EVSE has a supply cord longer than 12”, the plug must contain an integral GFCI. I have never seen a listed EVSE with a cord longer than 12”.
