A means shall be provided to disconnect power to all electronic equipment in the iformation technology equipment room.
Canb I safely assume the disconnect should not turn off power to the lights?

Re: 645.10 Disconnect

Thanks for the replies. In hindsight it seems like a silly question. For some reason, I was thinking the code required disconnecting all power to the room, but when I read it, it only says to disconnect electronic equipment.

Re: 645.10 Disconnect

There are no more ?silly questions? than there are ?stupid questions.? Any or all of us can stare at the same paragraph for an hour, and still not see the ?obvious? answer. It often takes a good night?s sleep or another person?s eyes to spot what we could not spot during our first, or second, or third reading.

Re: 645.10 Disconnect

OK, how about we twist the question a little bit.
Does the means provided to disconnect power to all electronic equipment, include shutting down duplex receptacles installed around the perimeter or on columns for general use?
Sometimes these general purpose receptacles have electronic equipment pluged into them for troubleshooting.

Re: 645.10 Disconnect

That?s a good twist. My answer would be ?no.? I believe the intent is to prevent the spread of an electrical fire, by shutting down, all at once, the loads that are the most likely cause of an electrical fire. The main concern is the wall-to-wall cabinets that house a vast array of side-by-side electronic fire sources. Plugging a test device, albeit electronic in nature, does not significantly add to the risk of creating or contributing to a fire hazard.

Re: 645.10 Disconnect

Charlie,
I should have said that in my opinion, there is no right answer for this question. My associates and I have tossed this topic around for a few years, and have varied opinions. My opinion is no EPO for the general purpose recepts, but some feel different and I appease them with a few extra shunt trip branch breakers if they insist.

Re: 645.10 Disconnect

Is the disconnecting means required to be next to or near the IT room or can this just be several circuit breakers located in a distant panel (ususally unmarked)?
