I have a 200 amp panel with 200 amp main OCPD and a calculated load of 160 amps. According to Art.702.5(B)(2)(a) 2008 NEC. I would need a Gen. large enough to carry the 160 amp load. Am I reading this correctly?

If you are using a automatic transfer switch then yes it must be sized to the load unless you do load shedding. If it were a manual transfer switch then it would not have to be sized for the full load. Or you could install a sub panel to supply your needed circutes and size it to that calculated load.

Thanx for your help, I have a better understanding of what is required.
