702.8 is the signage requirement for optional standby equipment. Do portable generators need this signage? It seems to me that only fixed in place equipment would be considered "on site". What say the code gurus?

I would say that you would still need a sign at the service equipment indicating that there is optional standby equipment that consists of transfer equipment and a portable generator.

I think a strict read of 702.8(A) would require a sign, but maybe the inspector will permit the transfer equipment itself to be the "Sign".

From what I have been told by inspector gurus the words "on-site" are key. They require signage at the service equipment stating there is more than one power source and its location on the property of a permanently installed unit.
