Hello All,

Maybe one of you has come across this before and can shed some light on it.

If there is a COPS installation that is looking to upgrade some its end-of-life equipment with new equipment, how does this rule deal with existing equipment that will not be upgraded? The existing equipment that will remain is down stream of the new upgraded equipment and cannot be selectively coordinated because the breakers of the existing equipment are not adjustable. I believe that the existing equipment will be upgraded at a later date. That being said, can the code be partially met with the intent of upgrading the non compliant equipment in the future?

Thank you for taking the time to read my question. I appreciate it!

I would think that the new upstream breakers could be selected to coordinate with the existing downstream. It would be up to the AHJ to decide, but I certainly would not put in equipment that did not result in a fully compliant system.

I don't think the answer is black / white.

Before you even look at 708, be sure you must comply. I have been designing COPS kind of stuff for a long time, and when the client sees the cost to comply with 708, they find some way to be sure it isn't required.

Thanks

Thanks

Ron, as you suggested, I am sure that the customer will find a way to get out of most of the 708 requirements. However, I don't think they will get away from the selective coordination requirement.

Thanks again.

Compliance is not a buffet menu. Either they comply with 708 or not.
