Good morning and welcome to another edition of ask the experts.

Question..
The above article references branch circuits supplying fire alarm equipment(s). Do electric door hold opens (mag locks) fall under "fire alarm equipment(s)"? IMO, they are not considered "fire alarm equipment(s)" because if power goes out to these mag locks, the doors just close. There closing has no bearing on life safety if fire alarm is not in an alarm state. The mag locks do hold open fire rated doors that separate different sections of the building and release on alarm but I don't consider the "mag locks" as fire alarm equipment.

Would this same thought process apply to fire smoke dampers?

Thoughts and welcome to Friday!

The thought process might. But I don't agree with it. The doors close to cut off oxygen feeding a fire. To me that makes it fire related equipment.
If the fire doesn't get oxygen it will slow it down saving lives.

They are definitely fire alarm equipment. They are usually activated by smoke detectors on either side of the doorway, so are the smokes not fire alarm equipment as well? They are only installed when required in corridors to separate the life safety zones (not sure if that is the right terminology) but, yes they are fire alarm equipment.

@Knightryder12
I would consider smoke detectors part of fire alarm equipment considering that are part of life safety system, get their power from the FACP as well as report to the FACP.
As for door hold open mags, these are provided by the door hardware division. Same applies to the fire/smoke dampers. Unless they are part of a smoke control system, in which they would now be considered life safety, they too would not be considered "fire alarm equipment".

Anything definitive in specifically stating door hold opens are considered "fire alarm equipment(s)"
