800.24 Mechanical Execution of Work.
Communications circuits and equipment shall be installed in a neat and workmanlike manner. Cables installed exposed on the outer surface of ceiling and sidewalls shall be supported by the structural components of the building structure in such a manner that the cable is not damaged by normal building use. Such cables shall be attached to structural components by straps, staples, hangers, or similar fittings designed and installed so as not to damage the cable. The installation shall also conform with 300.4(D) and 300.11.

300.4(D) (D) Cables and Raceways Parallel to Framing Members. In both exposed and concealed locations, where a cable- or raceway-type wiring method is installed parallel to framing members, such as joists, rafters, or studs, the cable or raceway shall be installed and supported so that the nearest outside surface of the cable or raceway is not less than 32 mm (1? in.) from the nearest edge of the framing member where nails or screws are likely to penetrate. Where this distance cannot be maintained, the cable or raceway shall be protected from penetration by nails or screws by a steel plate, sleeve, or equivalent at least 1.6 mm ( in.) thick.
Exception No. 1: Steel plates, sleeves, or the equivalent shall not be required to protect rigid metal conduit, intermediate metal conduit, rigid nonmetallic conduit, or electrical metallic tubing.
Exception No. 2: For concealed work in finished buildings, or finished panels for prefabricated buildings where such supporting is impracticable, it shall be permissible to fish the cables between access points.

300.11 Securing and Supporting.
(A) Secured in Place. Raceways, cable assemblies, boxes, cabinets, and fittings shall be securely fastened in place. Support wires that do not provide secure support shall not be permitted as the sole support. Support wires and associated fittings that provide secure support and that are installed in addition to the ceiling grid support wires shall be permitted as the sole support. Where independent support wires are used, they shall be secured at both ends. Cables and raceways shall not be supported by ceiling grids.
(1) Fire-Rated Assemblies. Wiring located within the cavity of a fire-rated floor?ceiling or roof?ceiling assembly shall not be secured to, or supported by, the ceiling assembly, including the ceiling support wires. An independent means of secure support shall be provided. Where independent support wires are used, they shall be distinguishable by color, tagging, or other effective means from those that are part of the fire-rated design.
Exception: The ceiling support system shall be permitted to support wiring and equipment that have been tested as part of the fire-rated assembly.
FPN: One method of determining fire rating is testing in accordance with NFPA 251-1999, Standard Methods of Tests of Fire Endurance of Building Construction and Materials.
(2) Non?Fire-Rated Assemblies. Wiring located within the cavity of a non?fire-rated floor?ceiling or roof?ceiling assembly shall not be secured to, or supported by, the ceiling assembly, including the ceiling support wires. An independent means of secure support shall be provided.
Exception: The ceiling support system shall be permitted to support branch-circuit wiring and associated equipment where installed in accordance with the ceiling system manufacturer?s instructions.
(B) Raceways Used as Means of Support. Raceways shall only be used as a means of support for other raceways, cables, or nonelectric equipment under the following conditions:
(1) Where the raceway or means of support is identified for the purpose; or
(2) Where the raceway contains power supply conductors for electrically controlled equipment and is used to support Class 2 circuit conductors or cables that are solely for the purpose of connection to the equipment control circuits; or
(3) Where the raceway is used to support boxes or conduit bodies in accordance with 314.23 or to support luminaires (fixtures) in accordance with 410.16(F)
(C) Cables Not Used as Means of Support. Cable wiring methods shall not be used as a means of support for other cables, raceways, or nonelectrical equipment.

According to this new reference in 800.24 now all communication circuits are subject to same wiring method as a 120v or 240v or 480v system. Such as no longer being able to store excess wire on top of panel of drop ceiling, but now must be secured. Even to maintaining fire rating of walls and protection from physical damage and even in places of assembly which have a certain number of people then all wiring must be ran in conduit (this # comes from NFPA life and safety code).
Do you all see this as true or is he trying to take it too far?

Re: 800.24 ?

I feel the added provision of 300.11 is unecessary and I don't not beleive there is any evidence not comforming to 300.11 when installing communications cable will or may lead to a hazard.

I can only assume that the ANSI/NECA/BICSI 568-2001 contains this provision and therefor the NEC is conforming to this standard.

Re: 800.24 ?

I know of one inspector that has tagged our rough ins because the LV sub didn`t conform to 300.4 D  They dont have an EC lisence but we get tagged  When questioned he said you are the EC and you have to insure all installations that fall under the NEC are your responsibility and comply with the NEC  We wire first, they come behind us.So how are we responsible for another company that isn`t required to be licensed other than an occupational liscense

Re: 800.24 ?

Electrical work has never been allowed to compromise the integrity of fire-rated assemblies. If the LV contractor is sub-contracted to your company, working under your permit, it's your responsibility.

Re: 800.24 ?

Allen, it looks like they're working under your co.'s license. Are you going to use them again?

Re: 800.24 ?

Well if we got a perentage of thier fee maybe but since they don`t come off a dime, guess they will just keep doing what they are doing  Ok lets see we have the ec license,we pull permit, we wire the house, they have only an occupational license, they come in right after us before our inspection is done,we get a $30.00 tag for thier inferior work....OH makes sense to me
