Starting 6/1/03 we adopt 2002 nec,we have been told that starting then all phone lines are going to have to be installed in accordance with this article 800.6 .Since a phone line with multiple ringers has the potential of 50 v or more,my question is simple.Since this is now an installation that falls under the nec guidelines
shouldn`t the lv contractors be required to have license that is the same as an electrical contractor is required to have. This all started when i met with an inspector that was inspecting in my area and we did not do the lv installation
in this home but he told me that starting 6/1/03
we would get tagged if 800.6 was not followed.
Even though it was done by others...............

Allen, we have been under the 02 code since 1-1-02 and the GC's are well aware of the electrical being red tagged due to the LV contractors. Our inspectors note the reasons specifically on the tag which eliminates us from blame. This being said, we also point out that they aren't part of our permit and we have no control over their work or authority to correct their work. It didn't take long after 1-1-02 for these contractors to get in line after liquidated damages and with held payments from owners came to play. Your GC's will get on your cart if they have any alligence to you, and if not, you sound as though your company is large enough to have some power as far as telling the GC or owner that this failed inspection is no fault of your's and you have no control but will call for the reinspection with back charge for fee when corrections are made.

In my city we require that you be licensed and bonded to take out a permit. If there is unlicensed work going on I will stop it, even if I have to post a stop work order on the whole job. The threat of one usually works. If the job is completed we won,t issue an occupancy permit.

Roger I agrre with you totally,if the gc doesn`t get the ducks lined up properly then i guess we will have to use our size to get it together. It is still really messed up that these lv contractors can come and go as they please,no regulating body to oversee them.If there work now falls under the nec guidelines then I say they should be licenced accordingly.
just venting allen
