96' NEC 110-16 (c)

Well I feel like I have gone back in time so to speak...or regressing. I am certified / tested to the 05' NEC and where I now work is still under the 96' NEC....enough about that. What I have here in the main gear room in a hi-rise well over 1200 amps has two 3/0 doors located at one end adjacent to each other, both have exit signage above the doors in the gear room and the doors swing into the gear room (btw. I did enter this gear room the other day for the first time and hit one of the electricians in the gear room) 05' NEC 110.26(C)(2) states doors shall open in the direction of egress. Is there a commentary regarding the door swing from 96'?.... and appreciate your thoughts as I always do.
 
The door(s) opening in the direction of egress and panic hardware requirements were added in the 2002 NEC.
 
Required to be on each end of the equipment. You have to be able to exit on the left or right.

Unless the depth of the working space is twice the sizes required by110.26(A)(1).
 
Well the good thing is you have a valid reason to pass this inspection, if it is not violating any article in the 96 NEC.
 
I would not like working on the two 208/120 gears on the back wall and run 30' passing by the 20' long 480/277 gear...(if something would happen) 4' working clearance both sides to get the H**L outta there. The doors are NOT at each end. Both at one end and swing in and hit the fire alarm equipment. I am not trying to be hard headed here.
