I don't do a lot of pools/spas, but I always re-read all of Art. 680 before undertaking one. Customer wants to install a pre-manufactured, hard-wired hot tub about 3 feet from the A/C condenser. I can't recall any restriction on proximity of hard-wired equipment to a pool/spa, as long as it is bonded properly. Have I missed anything?

As always, thank you. You are all an amazing resource.

I will never in my career do a pool or hot tub, but my wife got us a Softtub for my retirement. Its a lightweight hot tub- portable and easy to set up. It uses the heat from the motor to heat the water so runs on a 15 A circuit 120 volts. I had to read thru 690 and found out for self contained hot tubs there are no bonding requirements.

We've enjoyed it a lot. But now I need to build a deck and some kind of roof...

This pertains to the hot tub disconnect. Doesn’t mention other disconnecting means such as the AC unit disconnect.

Does not matter which disconnect, Fan, Relay, or energized equipment is within 5 ft of Hot Tub. Its just another excuse to deny claims.

When dealing with injury claims, property insurance won't cover the Hot Tub, even if someone slips & falls.

With claims denied, courts attach owner property. Owner loses house, and sicks his lawyer on idiot electrician for helping to install it that way.

Lawyers for Hot tub owner and idiot electrician do battle in court over damages, dragging out motions, expert witnesses, & appeals, until both idiots homes are foreclosed for legal costs & cash settlement with injured party.

I believe you meant 680 and there are requirements for bonding on outdoor tubs unless I am unaware of something special in your case.

680.42 Outdoor Installations. A spa or hot tub installed
outdoors shall comply with the provisions of Parts I and II of
this article, except as permitted in 680.42(A) and (B), that
would otherwise apply to pools installed outdoors.

680.42(B) Bonding. Bonding by metal-to-metal mounting on a
common frame or base shall be permitted. The metal bands or
hoops used to secure wooden staves shall not be required to be
bonded as required in 680.26.
Equipotential bonding of perimeter surfaces in accordance
with 680.26(B)(2) shall not be required to be provided for spas
and hot tubs where all of the following conditions apply:
(1) The spa or hot tub shall be listed, labeled, and identified
as a self-contained spa for aboveground use.
(2) The spa or hot tub shall not be identified as suitable only
for indoor use.
(3) The installation shall be in accordance with the manufacturer’s
instructions and shall be located on or above
grade.
(4) The top rim of the spa or hot tub shall be at least 710 mm
(28 in.) above all perimeter surfaces that are within
760 mm (30 in.), measured horizontally from the spa or
hot tub. The height of nonconductive external steps for
entry to or exit from the self-contained spa shall not be
used to reduce or increase this rim height measurement.
