There is a fairly new Room airconditioning system - (Minnie Split System) CHIGO is one companies that manufactures them. I am working for a company oversea's on U S Military bases. I have not been able to get a response from the manufacture as of yet. The AHJ and the inspection teams have bounced back and forth on whether or not the outside condenser unit needs to have an A/C disconnect or not. The unit is a minnie split system designed for room air conditioning and is not a two, three, or five ton split system. Standard procedure for the first year I was deployed oversea's was, that the equipment was cord and plug connected, and that is common procedure in other countries. We perform all of our installations according to the 2008 NEC at this time. I have been unable up to now to find anything in the 2008 NEC that recognises these new minnie split systems as room airconditioners, and therefore falling under room airconditioners allows them to be cord and plug connected. (the units come from the manufacture with the wire to run from the inside unit to the outside unit and either a cord and plug or just a cord that can be terminated on a switch gor the inside unit) If anyone is aware of the code sections in the 2008 NEC that applies to this type of installation,I would appreciate any direction you may have. Thank you - ktoosweetsr

I’ve done a few. I had pictures, but for some reason i can’t find them. I done them three years ago, but I believe I installed a small nema 3R panel within sight of all three units. The panel was sized to serve all three mini-splits—>>each A/C unit getting it’s own listed 2 pole OCPD. Mini’s are a different ball game. But yes, a disconnect is required, either for a single unit, or a group of units—depending on your code complaint design plan.

It seems to me a cord connection would be a stretch to fit any of the "uses allowed" in 400.7

I believe the OP was asking about the outside portion—where a conductor(s) would need to be directly connected. had the same setup, but they did not give us an option to use a plug and cord to the inside units. The Hvac guys had to run a small copper tube to each unit, and that was a pain for them. It was very time consuming. A new experience indeed!!!
