a friend has an old gas driven gen from 20's era which he said came from a drag line or shovel, he wanted to know if it is ac or dc , and is it feasible to convert to a/c for home for backup power , the only thing on this gen is an old fusible disconnect and a large resistor and no nameplate ? when running the voltage is erattic up to 500v, how can i determine the source type i used a multi meter and it reads on both ac and dc?

What was it used to do ?Perhaps just lighting. I would highly suggest he just takes a trip to big orange and put this jobby on e bay

If it is a DC device, it needs a commutator. The stator is the field and the rotor is the DC output so needs a commutator.
If it as an AC device, it will have slip rings. The rotor is the field and uses slip rings. The stator is the AC output.

Even if it turns out to be ac i dought the voltage and frequency will work out.Its worked long past 65 it needs to retire.
