Is it code compliant to install disconnect on side of A/C. We are talking 30 Ton Unit.

Thanks

Re: A/C

I guess I was wanting to know if there was a code reference as to : it is an approved or not approved. I agree that it is probally a good way of installing to unit.

Re: A/C

is'nt it easer to put it on the building, and just use "k flex" to the unit,
wont you be saving a bell box & a weather proof blank cover?
just a thought,,

Re: A/C

"440.14 Location. Disconnecting means shall be located within sight from and readily accessible from the airconditioning or refrigerating equipment. The disconnecting means shall be permitted to be installed on or within the
air-conditioning or refrigerating equipment.

The disconnecting means shall not be located on panels that are designed to allow access to the air-conditioning or refrigeration equipment."

Re: A/C

the last sentence is important -- i have come across a few that were mounted on access panels required to service the unit............

Re: A/C

When he said 30 ton unit, I was assuming it would be located on a roof. In this case it is easier usually to mount the disconnect on the unit. There is usually a dedicated space provided for this by the manufacturer of the unit.

Re: A/C

The other 'easiest way' is to have the HVAC contractor order the unit with a unit mounted disconnect. Virtually all mfrs of commercial equipment offer this option.

That may be the "easiest way" but if I am responsible for wiring that unit then I would rather be the one to mount the disconnect and wire it.
