a.f.c.i. trips only when a load is present

I am having this problem....AFCI circuit wired in nm 14 ga.,when turned on breaker holds,use a plug tester all seems ok.But plug anything in it and it trips,I changed breakers no change.Ohm meter shows all clear on the hot.Any ideas

Wayne this is one of only three things.

1. Ground/neutral connection: Look for a bare ground wire touching a neutral at a device

2. neutral of the wrong circuit being used ether at load end or at the breaker end: Check which wire is on the breaker and load end

3. Shared neutral with two circuits: You cannot share a neutral unless you use a two pole AFCI breaker. Just like a GFCI circuit.

I agree with Hurk, in the three types of causes it may be. When pushing the device back into the box, sometimes the bare equipment ground conductor will be directed towards and make contact with the grounded conductor of the device. Also the fixtures may cause the same problem.

I`ll find out today,house closes Friday :roll: I found this on Wednesday and have to get back there today.
