My understanding of Chapter 13 of the 780 CMR, chapter 13, the energy code, is that it refers one to the IECC. In the IECC, paragraph 4.1 one is told that one may use one of the following standards with the two listed being ASHRAE 90.1 and then a reference to 4.2, 4.3, 4.4 of the IECC. Bottom line, one may choose which of the two standards to go by.

I recently indicated as much with a group of colleagues who unanimously rejected this analysis assuring me that MA has now made it clear that only the amended IECC constitutes our energy code and there is no longer the option of going by ASHRAE 90.1. I don't see that this is in fact the case but wonder if I am missing something.

I appreciate your input.

Thanks

You are correct. The current 780 CMR 13 adopts the 2015 IECC as amended.

The amendments to C401.2 say Commercial buildings shall comply with ONE of the following:
1. The requirements of ASHRAE 90.1-2013...
2. The requirements of C402 through C405...
3. The requirements of Sections C402.5, C403.2, C404, C405.2, C405.3, C405.4, C405.6, and C405.7....
