I have been "graced" with a job where there is a large amount of abandoned raceways, equipment, conductors, feeders, outlets, etc.

Building is about 40 years old and was originally a large chain grocery store.

Tons of conduits cut off and hanging, etc. A real mess.

I see in the code regarding abandoned data, telephone, audio, etc. stuff, but what about the "heavy" power stuff?

There are no NEC requirements to remove abandonded "heavy power wiring" (Outside of IT power circuits;)).

Chris

Don't these say I have to remove the conductors?

372.13 Discontinued Outlets. When an outlet is abandoned,
discontinued, or removed, the sections of circuit
conductors supplying the outlet shall be removed from the
raceway. No splices or reinsulated conductors, such as
would be the case of abandoned outlets on loop wiring,
shall be allowed in raceways.

374.7 Discontinued Outlets. When an outlet is abandoned,
discontinued, or removed, the sections of circuit
conductors supplying the outlet shall be removed from the
raceway. No splices or reinsulated conductors, such as
would be the case with abandoned outlets on loop wiring,
shall be allowed in raceways.

390.7 Discontinued Outlets. When an outlet is abandoned,
discontinued, or removed, the sections of circuit
conductors supplying the outlet shall be removed from the
raceway. No splices or reinsulated conductors, such as
would be the case with abandoned outlets on loop wiring,
shall be allowed in raceways.

Yep, I forgot about underfloor raceways, since I don't use them or seem them very often.:)

Chris

They're not abandoned. They're 'for future use'. :D

As soon as Westinghouse gets back to me with the proper lugs, I'm hooking this back up.

All kidding aside I have plenty of facilities that have abandoned stuff everywhere.

P.S. I can still get the paper that goes in the KWh meter. When we get the museum open we are going to try to run a circuit or two through it an see if it works.

Problem is that only applies to Cellular Metal Floors Raceways.

Attached is one representative picture of the mess. I know there are support, etc. issues, but in general the electrical is 40 years of cobbling.
