Have a job where we're being asked to put a speaker (happens to be a sub-woofer but who cares) flush in the ceiling. This particular speaker needs 120V and comes with a cord similar to what you typically get with a computer. i.e. the cord has a female end which plugs into the woofer and a male end which plugs into a receptacle.

How can one install this without violating the code which precludes the use of a cord being used above a suspended ceiling.

The vendor of course, says "hey! - we do it all the time! This is not particularly comforting. Any thoughts?

You don't. The only thing that occurs to me is to request a variance from the AHJ.

That's the saying most inspectors hear each day and its also the saying most inspectors use. I know I've said it myself. 400.8 (2) won't allow it. I don't have any idea if you could get the AHJ to give you a variance. But a simple phone call doesn't cost much.

Have then re-build the suspended ceiling to make a recess for the speaker. That will place the speaker below the ceiling.
