How deep does the conduit have to be?
What type of conduit, plastic, metal?
Any special grounding required for the GFI?

The requirements are different in various locations.
Best to call the local inspector for information.

Question for you. How will you bond the pool structure and motor? Point being there is more to it than running a gfi receptacle to power the pump. Get an electrician save your family.

the pool walls must be bonded as does the motor .
install a ground lug on the pool walls, run a #6 bare coppr ground (a little large, but OK) from this lug through the motor ground lug and to an 8-foot ground rod (driven all the way into the ground). Now depths for the circuit can vary. Typically, I run the new circuit from the panel to a weatherproof bell box (on the side of the house). there I install the GFCI Outlet. Run pvc into the ground now you can use standard 12/2 UF cable (direct bury) 12" deep, to the pool power location, then run pvc up to another weather-proof bell box supported by a 4x4 post, install a twist lock outlet with an IN-USE cover. cut the power cord to the pump motor and install a matching twinst lock cord cap. (You're set)

rperry,

Please name the code section that allows you to use UF cable.

Re: Above ground pool electrical questions....

Rperry, you can only use uf through the interior of a single family dwelling. (But why not use romex) You must use counduit outside. You only need #8 solid as a bonding grid run from the pool and other meatl parts to the motor which should have a lug to connect to. (No ground rod is needed or should be installed). The conduit shall be burried 18" for pvc and 6" for metal. Thats all I can think of right now. Scott

r2dolphins,

There is much that was not even mentioned here. It really is a bit too much to just list all of the rules for pool installations.

Wity your question, you seem to be in over your head, so to speak. Pools have a number of special requirements, you should get a electrical familar with pool wiring to assist or do the installation.
