AC Amp Question

I confused by the readings I'm getting while measuring the current draw on a small desktop humidifier. It's a 2 speed unit with a fan and a heater putting out warm water vapor to increase humidity. Its a 275 watt unit so at most it should draw about 2.3 amps. At low speed my DMM (on the 10 A scale) reads 0.997 amps which seems reasonable but when I switch the humidifier to high speed the amps drop off to .001. What am I missing here?
