Is it within code to use a standard double gang box and install one 120VAC switch and 1 adjacent 24VDC switch or do the boxes need to be separated?

Yes.........and no.

The fact one is AC and one is DC is not the issue. The problem is mixing class 2 (I am assuming) and line voltage. You must use separate boxes or get a barrier for a single box.

We do this often, but as often have to "fabricate" a voltage divider which is a fancy term for a barrier as referred to before.

I have seen voltage dividers in the Borg stores where they are bringing "smart house" wiring into a multi-gang box with 120V stuff.

The voltage divider must totally isolate the entire internal area of the box so that there can be no "crossover" of conductors.

Many choose to use separate boxes to eliminate hassle factor.

300.2 Limitations
(A) Voltage. Wiring methods specified in Chapter 3 shall be used for 600 volts, nominal, or less where not specifically limited in some section of chapter 3.

...

300.3 (C)(1) Conductors of Different Systems.
(1) 600 Volts, Nominal, of Less. conductors of circuits rated 600 volts, nominal, of less ac circuits and dc circuits shall be permitted to occupy the same equipment wiring enclosures, cable, or raceway. All conductors shall have an insulation rating equal to at least the maximum circuit voltage applied to any conductor within the enclosure, cable, or raceway.

In most cases that is not the case in respects to the respective insulation!

Your lucky, I just typed all this out in another post of today.

Your exactly right, thanks for pointing out the lack of a FPN in my OP.

I guess its a mind block on my part that I wouldn't state 725 and of how often I see work installed or should I say, have seen, butchered in respect to 725, and with-in Class structures.

I do like 725.55(A) in which they have there own stipulations to be met from (B) to (J).
Otherwise to the orginal OP, does it really change things? If not appliable, no.:).

Friends don't let friends mix services JMO... put in another Box, run another condo/route, easy to say but just work to be done...
