Is it acceptable to utilize a 3p 3w 600v safety switch for a 1p load? Ie taking 1 hot and 1 neutral and disconnecting 1 hot (using 1 of the 3 poles in the disconnect) and leaving the neutral running thru the disconnect. This would leave 2 of the 3 poles within the disconnect empty. Is this allowed?

Welcome to the forum.

Sounds like an expensive option, though. Would a simple toggle switch work, perhaps HP rated?

Yes BUT you need to even the wear. Wire it up either with 3 poles in parallel or looping poles in series.

You can use two of the poles for the neutral and ungrounded conductor in the switch. See 404.2(B) Exception.

Required, or simply a suggestion to increase switch life? Or just a joke?

I have specifically seen a manufacturer requirement to use all 3 poles when switching two wire DC, one condictor looped through 2 poles, the other conductor through the third.
