Access Control

For any of you who are good at figuring out access control systems:

I've got a non-egress door, with in/out card readers, and electric lock (on emergency power), between a two buildings. I am being told we need a request-to-exit device at this door...I can't figure out why. Any wild guesses? I'm still pretty new to access control, and working on some rules of thumb.

Maybe because there are exit signs directing people to this door? Maybe just because they want one? I think an RTE is a good idea on any door, required egress or otherwise.

No exit sign, it's a non-egress door. They specifically don't want people coming this way (into a security center). Won't the RTE pretty much defeat the purpose of the card reader?

Maybe so. I was picturing outdoor space between these two buildings. If there's not, an RTE would be a dumb idea. Sounds like someone got their wires crossed. I'd be asking some questions on that one. Either that or have the aux contacts on the RTE also sound an alarm, in addition to just opening the door.
