Accessary apartment

I have a custumer that has an in-law apartment above his garage. He went to the town and got it reclassified as an accessary apartment. He now wants to put it on its own meter. So I asked the local inspector about adding the meter and he said do it. Now the main house is 2000 square feet, with a 200 amp underground service. The service lateral conductors are 4/0 Alum..The main house comes out to about 140 amps, per art. 220. The apartment works out to about 89 amps , per art. 220. I plan on putting a 2- gang meter socket in with 2- disconnects built in,one will be 150 amp and the other will be a 100 amp , and pull in new 4/0 copper conds. I have a friend that says that the 4/0 Alum. is big enough for this service , my friend seems to think that between the main house and the apartment , they will never draw 200 amps. Does anybody believe this.

I will not go in to sizing the circuitry.
But, to answer your question - yes, I would believe that the house & apartment would not exceed a 200A load.

Re: Accessary apartment

I also tend to agree that 200A rated service entrance conductors will be sufficent for this particular situation. Section 230.90(A) Exception No. 3 would permit the 150A and 100A main breakers as long as the calculated load does not exceed the rating of the service conductors.

Perhaps you should compute the optional method for the two dwellings to see if that will bring you below 200A. The optional method tends to be lower than the standard.

Re: Accessary apartment

The 89 amps just seems high for an apartment above a garage.
What kind of specifics are there?
