acoustic ceiling support wires

Can anyone tell me which article addresses the marking or identification requierments, when attaching a cable in this case MC to a ceiling wire? I know you must use your own wire but not a ceiling support wire, but I have had an inspector tell me that it must me spray painted red? I simply tagged it red with tape, and he said it must be painted?

But 300.11 only requires marking in the case of a fire rated assembly. Where I am, fire rated suspended ceiling assemblies are rare to non-existant. I'm not aware of a reqirement for marking support wires in any other situation.
