Add smoke/heat detectors?

I have a kitchen remodel in RI. There is no FA in this 80 yr old house. When I rewire this kitchen, is one heat det. going to be sufficient, or will I have to be required to add a smoke or two in the hallway, living room, basement, etc?

Generally a heat detector is not a life safety device and cannot take place of the required life safety devices. It's really up to the enforcing authority to decide if this kitchen project will trigger a requirement to install smoke detectors in the entire house. Around here a simple remodel job wouldn't force you to install a complete smoke detection system.
