Adding a ground wire to an ungrounded system

Does NEC 250.130(C) (or another section) allow a separate ground wire to be pulled to receptacle boxes and that ground wire be attached to the existing cable with zip-ties or similar? Can the ground wire be run apart from the existing cables (for example if there is a different route which is easier to run the wire through)?

It does not seem to me that the code specifies how you route the conductor.

However, the code does generally require single conductors to be in conduit so I think zip tying them to the existing cable is out.
