Have a potential client who wants to add a meter for his rental in the back. He has a CH225 main at his house and a 100A subfeed to back rental house. The reason he wants seperate meters is because his electric bill is now on a high tier so he doesnt even bill his tenant for utilities...how do you decide who pays the higher tier charges?...is what he figures. I thought of an Emon Dmon, but that wont get his bill down to a lower tier. So what we've come up with is adding a two gang meter pack and using the existing 225 main combo as a J-box and using a 150 main for the big house and a 60 for the tenant's place.

Got any better ideas??

Is this a "Bootleg" rental? If not why not let the POCO do the billing by getting the rental metered separately instead of submetering & in the long term will eliminate hassles w/ tenants not paying for electrical usage.A 2-gang meter pack would be a clean way to do it.

I don't understand why you want to keep the old panel box for a j-box.
Why don't you bring your service right into the meter pack?

Other than that, I'd do the load calcs on both units and then do as you've suggested.

Sharpie-
The old meter (all in one combo) is a flush mount that fits in a 14.5" stud bay. The new 2 gang meter pack is 25" wide and surface mounted...so either we junction it which isn't pretty, or we pull the existing flush mount, stucco patch behind it and surface mount the new 2 gang. Or pull the old flushmount, stucco patch, install a 14" X 14" WP NEMA 3 J-box and the new 2 gang next to it. All of these optinos will involve installing a subpanel on the backside of the meter in the garage also.

So... whaddya think?

Sparky, I see what you're saying. If it was my place, I think I'd opt to stucco over and run the service right into the new meter combo. Where is the sub-panel getting fed from?

However, since it's a customer I'd see what their preference is (both esthetically and financially) and then see if it would fly with the AHJ.

barbeer - What post are you referring to?
