Hello Everybody,
I work in a maintenance plant with 24 hr maintenance supervision. We are working on adding a local disconnect to a Motor in a class II div II location. My question is regaurding article 80 for additions, and the grandfathering of older raceways in line.

At the motor we planned to put a nema 9, disconnect, with sealoffs. The original conduit has set screw style connectors and is EMT and has been there for about 40 yrs. We need dust-tight. As Far as updating do we have to rebuild this whole section of conduit and re-pull the wire back to the MCC. We planned to bring everything we touch up to code, not sure about the few hundred feet of conduit we are not touching that is part of the same feed.

Any advice is welcome.

I am not aware of any area that has adopted Article 80. That type of information is normally covered in the adopting ordinance or statute.

In general "grandfather" clauses only apply to installation that were code compliant when they were originally installed.

That being said, I don't see anything that prohibits the use of set screw connectors in that application as long as there are means to prevent the dust from entering the disconnect. The rule in 502.10(B)(1)(2) that permits the use of EMT in the Class II, Division 2 area does not specify the type of fittings that are to be use with the EMT.

Don,
Thanks for reply.
I will see what I can find in the adopting ordinance and work on finding original blueprints to see if anything has been changed that I am unaware of.

On the dust tight fittings - Thanks, I just missed this part, looked at everything else that had to have listed fittings and I'm used to seeing compression fittings for dust tight applications.
