hi all,

in a rural area the water pipe is pvc.
installers of dss, gate operators, alarms etc. in residences usually put the egc on branch emt with a compression strap. homes end up with several items bonded this way no where near the entrance.

i didn't think this was allowed but there is no ahj or nec adaptation in these places anyways.
so i was just curious.

thank you,
ron g.

Not allowed at all.
The owners of the residence are at risk of having the equipment damaged in a lighting strike. It does not have to hit the building.
The allowed locations for connecting the bonding jumper from the network interface, or gray box, are given in Art 800, 810 and 820 depending on what system is being installed.
Basically you bond to the building electrical grounding system.

Re: adding egc's to branch emt.

i decided to take an intrest in this subject.

for alarms there is no good reason for them not to bond the panel properly.

for gate operaters, their location makes it difficult to meet nec requirements.

for dbs it is almost always nearly impossible to bond the dish meeting nec requirements.

chapter 8 is not really up to realistic modern standards in regard to dish. true, it is suggesting what is safe and prudent if not impossible.

echostar's installers guide suggests "bonding to a metalic raceway at or between subpanels"

the big problem i see is when more than one (interconnected) item is bonded this way and not at the same location.
which is bound to happen. this is part of what chapter 8 addresses(common location near service entrance or not more than 5 feet on bonded water main).

then add to this that the messenger cable they use is a #17 kinked and bent through metal gutters along aluminum siding and through drop ceiling frames.

i have however never known any ahj to complain about this. probably because this thing does not even require a permit pull in almost any municipality.

is all this a good idea or even safe? i doubt it. but then why is it allowed almost everywhere?

i was just wondering what some of you here think about this subject.
