I have replaced a good portion of my wiring during renovations and recently tried to put in a smart light switch.
Turns out that it requires a neutral and the way I wired this particular swtich was to use a 12-2 wire to carry the hot down the black and back up the white when switched on. I think its a common way to do that when there is power in the box at the fixture.
if I add neutral, I have some questions. First off, swapping the 12-2 for 12-3 and sending down neutral would be painful if not impossible. The wire is stapled in the ceiling and down the wall.
Is it possible to pick up neutral in a nearby box and run that single wire through the wall to the box?
Does it matter which circuit i pull neutral from? I know that sounds dumb, but all of my neutral are bonded to the same neutral bus bar, so it kind of seems equivalent.
