When you add to an existing circuit in residential wiring are you required to upgrade to current codes. Arc Fault breakers.Have a customer wanting to add a couple of recessed lighting fixtures .
Thanks

I think the 2014 gives the specifics on this. I think it states if you extend any circuit in an area that is required to have AFCI protection that you have to add the AFCI protection.
I think there is an exception of like 6' that was intended for panel changes.

Now with that said, would I add AFCI for two added lights.....:happyno:

AFCI requirement on extended circuits depends on your jurisdiction.

If you are installing a new circuit then yes it has to be AFCI if required per code. (bedrooms, lights, .....)

If you are extending the circuit and it is an old two wire circuit without the EGC, then it has to be GFCI protected or the new portion be tied to the grounding system per 250, and AFCI protected if required by your jurisdiction.
