adding to100 amp panel confusion.

I'm a home owner wanting to add additional circuits to my 20 circuit panel(SIEMENS) i have one blank open. My city inspector tells me i can add upto 5 dual breakers. I contacted an electrician and was told i could add circuits so long as i donot exceed 40. I read the topic (Maximum amperage of circuits in servive panel )and now i am more confused.

I always get a bit nervous when I reply to a home owners post, as I dont' know your abilities as an electrician. My experience with Seimens panels is that they allow the bottom third of the panel to have tandem breakers installed. Your panel should have a marking such as 30/40, meaning 30 spaces and 40 circuits permitted.

What is the model number of your panel? This will tell you how many circuit breakers the pane will hold.
