Im currently doing my final year project which is the intelligent grounding system. This forum seems to be very informative in the field of grounding. Since im focusing my thesis on the single electode arrangement, i would like to ask some of the experienced guys here a few questions...

1. What is the single rod arrangement usually used for? lightning protection, building.. ect

2. What should i be focusing on for my background studies.. is it about lightning?

3. What websites and books should i be looking for if i want to learn more abt the protection provided by just using a single electrode grounding?

Thanks in advance... :)

Thanks for the tips bro.. i did some reading on the bonding and grounding, but it seems to be out of my topic

Anway my project is concerned on maintaining a safe resistance on the grounding electrode so that it provides a safe path... im thinking of using salt moisture as a medium to lower the electrode to soil resistance, this moisture spraying process is automated using a sensor...

As in my literature review section, should i be talking about bounding & grounding or lightning dissipation process of the electrode? coz this grounding field seems to be really wide.. Do give me some advice regarding this.. thanks in advance

Your using the word "intelligent" here :D:D:D:D:D

I dunt get wat do u mean by that... Thats the title of my project.. Its like building an automated system to maintain the ground resistance value at optimal.. but its an amateur version using a single electrode configuration

there are chemical grounds that are a 2" copper pipe filled with chemical
that goes into a 12" angered hole. then the rod is grouted in with a material
approved for the purpose. it is a designed system. it already addresses the
self optimizing quality you are searching for, using metallic salts. no water
spraying necessary. i've installed them. they work very well.

here is the manufacturers link:

http://www.jacksontelcom.com/egsdescript.html

"ELECTROLYTIC GROUNDING SYSTEM (EGS) provides the lowest
resistance to ground regardless of the amount of moisture, type or chemical
content of the soil. This is the most stable method of grounding known.

This system is an efficient way to provide grounding because it can replace up
to 8 conventional copper clad metal ground rods. ELECTROLYTIC
GROUNDING SYSTEM (EGS) in dry soil will provide an efficiency over driven
ground rods of 300% to 800%. By eliminating the number of conventional
ground rods you eliminate the amount of land and labor required to create a
low resistant ground field. This can be a big savings in time, labor and
materials."

You have mentioned single electrode grounding a few times.

Do you possibly mean Single Point Grounding?

The third illustration pointed out in the Mike Holt paper illustrates Single Point Grounding.

The resistance to ground is another story altogether.

Go to Google and type in:

Grounding electrode resistance
Grounding electrode
Single point grounding.

You may be able to read these before you graduate...in another 4 years

Thanks alot for the technical notes link bro.. its really helpful...

Actually i have read alot of stuffs on grounding theory and currently im wirting my thesis. On the literature review part im confused on wat i should write. This is the flow that im using.. hope u guys could comment on it

Literature Review

1. Introduction
Why grounding is required

2. Bonding Vs grounding
Why ppl misuse it.. at the end of this section i wrote...

Since this projects objective is to design an intelligent grounding
system it?s obvious that the background study should be continued on the
lightning and distribution protection that grounding provides.

This was because the notes that i read says that bonding provides protection for equipment and personnel while grounding provides protection to the Fault Currents, Lightning Strikes, Static Discharges, EMI and RFI
is that statement valid? because from what i have read it shows that grounding provides protection for distribution system(overvoltages) and lightning.. Or are there others

3. Theory of Fault current (due to overvoltages)

4. Lightning (Theory)

5. Types of grounding

Methods of System Neutral Grounding
a. Resistance Grounding
b. Reactance Grounding
c. Resonant Grounding
d. Solid Grounding
e. Ungrounded Systems
- Advantage and Disadvantage of Neutral Grounding System

6. Ground Rods

Types of ground rod
Material of the rod
Types of arrangements
Sphere influence of rod

7. Grounding Measurement

Fall of Potential
Influences on Ground resistance
- soil
- Temperature
- Depth of rod
- Num of Rod
- Etc

Thats how i have planned my literature review part.. IM confused where should i include step voltage and touch voltage? Any other things that i should include.. Hope u guys can help me out.. Thanks in advance :)
