The Backstory
I have somewhat of a backwards type situation when it comes to electrical licenses specifically Florida. I work for an electrician who does residential electric and very rarely Commercial. After my first year and a half I spent every day studying that code book inside and out. At 1.5 years I was able to take several electrical contracting practice exams and passed them. I've passed it 5 times already on practice exams. Florida has no problem with me going to take the test and at least have it on my record but of course I don't meet the qualifications to obtain the license.
The Rules of the Master
I know of someone who is willing to qualify me and allow me to start my own business with the prerequisites:
1.) Pass the electrical exam officially with FL so it's on record.
2.) Only perform residential electrical services under the qualification.
No problem
Book Knowledge Isn't Application Experience
I am aware that book knowledge doesn't convert to hands on trade experience as also stated in NEC 90.1 as it is just a guide. I am aware that I will not have the type of exposure that I need to certain situations. In that short span I also quickly learned the application part and when I didn't, I asked or searched for the answer. In life and as with this situation, I will always continue to remain teachable and except advice or mentor ship from anyone who is willing to offer it. I'm very independent and 95% of the time I can obtain the information I need that is not in the book. My wording may project a know it all type attitude but I don't, I'm very comfortable with asking that in which I do not know.
The Problem
I can pass the exam and I understand that I don't meet the criteria in trade experience. However, it won't be long before I can as I started as an operational manager for the current employer I work for. I will have 3 years management experience when I include two years of owning my own business. While I understand 3 phase electric, I will not ever meet the criteria of having 45% of my experience in 3 Phase Electric.
I strongly desire to start my business performing residential electric work under this qualified license but will I ever be able to obtain an EC license on my own without that experience as I have no ambition to perform commercial work just residential. How can I obtain an EC License of my own without this?
Whats Aggrevating!
It's incredibly aggregating that I know guys that have been in the trade over 10 years and don't have any real knowledge of the NEC. They know 50% of the rules to follow but the other portion comes from their boss and his instruction.
I would appreciate any feedback. I know that was long.
