My state will be adopting the 2008 NEC come Jan. 1, 2010. I want to be certain I understand the new AFCI requirements correctly. It looks like the areas excluded from AFCI protection in a dwelling are any outlets covered by GFCI protection, lighting outlets in the kitchen, bathrooms, garage, laundry, outside lighting, crawl space and/or unfinished basement.

What I highlighted is not in 210.12(B).
If, for instance, you have a wet bar w/ sink in a family room or bedroom, the receptacle would require both GFCI and AFCI.

I see where you are coming from, an AFCI protected circut could require a GFCI receptacle in certain instances like the one you described. Thanks for pointing that out, I would not have thought of that.
