Just wondering if AFCI protection is required on 20A 2 Pole circuits feeding baseboard heating units in bedrooms? Thanks.

John

Re: AFCI for baseboard heating in bedroom

If by "2-pole" you mean this is a 240 volt heater, then the answer is no. AFCI is only required for 120 volt circuits that have one or more outlets that are located in a bedroom.

Hi John, welcome to the forum. No, AFCI protection is not required. If you would like to learn more about this topic, click here. :D

would add that if the baseboard heater has a receptacle that receptacle would need to be on a afci

Very true but that was not what was asked. This is how a simple question goes 50 pages.

Re: AFCI for baseboard heating in bedroom

I know but I have seen 3 wire on baseboard heat with a receptacle on a 20A 2 pole before.

Re: AFCI for baseboard heating in bedroom

In that case, was the power to the 120 volt receptacle taken from the same circuit as the 240 volts for the heater (i.e., same breaker)?

If so, then that entire circuit, heater and all, would have to have AFCI protection. I don't know if it is physically possible, with the equipment available today, to provide AFCI protection to a circuit that has both 120 V and 240 V loads. But I think the rules would require it.

You would simply use a 2-pole AFCI breaker.

Of course, not all manufacturers make one, so that could be a problem.

Re: AFCI for baseboard heating in bedroom

210.52 prevents the outlet. from being on the heater circuits. so you would need to feed the outlet from a afci circuit and the heater on a non afci 2 pole breaker. when I said that I have seen 3 wire on baseboard heaters I don't mean it is up to code.
