Indiana adaopted the 05' NEC in September of 05' and someone in this forum a while back mentioned that Indiana was possibly going to amend AFCI requirements. I just found out they no longer require them. Is this a good thing or a bad thing? The reason, I was told that they do not function properly when subjected to cold temps ex. Panel on outside wall, unheated garage (very common Inatallation especially in tract homes)appreciate your thoughts and opinions.

Do you have any links or references to that? Does "not function properly" mean tripping when it shouldn't, failing to trip when it should, or ???

Re: AFCI in Indiana

Mike, thanks. Yes, according to our large building dept and local IAEI they were not tripping and I am calling them back today for reference, etc. I am shocked "no pun intended" re. this amendment! Will let You know unless others are also aware.

Re: AFCI in Indiana

I just looked it up and sure enough, 210.12(b) is deleted without substitution in the '05 Indiana Electrical Code. Thanks for the tip off on this. I'm getting ready to design a high-rise condo building and I have to decide if I want to include AFCI's or not. Truthfully, I'm leaning toward leaving them in the design anyway.

Re: AFCI in Indiana

As an inspector in a smaller city in Indiana, I was suprised to find that AFCI were deleted from the '05 code. Normally Indiana leaves the NEC alone when adopting except for administrative. I have heard that some manufacturers have already lobbied to place the requirement back in and there may be chase amendments to that effect. Much like the GFCI's, no one likes them at first, but eventually we all accept them. As a firefighter I have seen older wiring be an area of origin on numerous fires. Someday we will figure out a way to protect the older homes that have not been upgraded. Maybe the POCO's can place AFCI's on the service drop. (joking)
